Grades & Chemical Analysis

Two air-drying long oil alkyds — the conventional grade for decorative and general industrial paints, the urethane-modified grade where through-hardening and water resistance matter. Select a grade to view its full specification.

Solubility & Compatibility

What the conventional RV124 grade will and will not tolerate in a formulation — worth checking before you commit a batch.

Bespoke Production

Need a different oil length or solids content?

Short, medium and long oil alkyds can be produced to your target oil length, acid value, viscosity and solvent system. Send us your specification and we will confirm feasibility, pricing and lead time.

Applications

Long oil alkyds are the workhorse binder of the solvent-borne coatings industry — they brush well, they gloss, and they keep the gloss.

Decorative Architectural Paint

Interior and exterior gloss and semi-gloss finishes.

Wood & Metal Primers

Anti-corrosive primers and undercoats.

Alkyd Polishes & Varnishes

Clear finishes with high gloss retention.

Colour Paste & Tinters

Grinding vehicle for pigment dispersions.

Industrial & Marine Varnish

Urethane-modified grade for water and weathering resistance.

Parquet & Floor Sealers

Through-hardening finishes for wood floors.

Road Marking Paint

Fast-drying traffic paint binders.

Building Linings

Wall and ceiling coating systems.

Alkyd Resin — Frequently Asked Questions

What does “long oil” mean and why does it matter?
Oil length is the proportion of fatty acid in the resin — ours is around 56%, which puts both grades in the long oil class. Long oil alkyds dissolve in cheap aliphatic solvents like white spirit, brush out easily with a long open time, and give excellent gloss and exterior durability. Short oil alkyds need stronger aromatic solvents and are aimed at baked industrial finishes instead.
When should I choose the urethane-modified grade?
When you need faster through-hardening, better water resistance and better abrasion resistance than a conventional alkyd delivers — parquet sealers, wood finishes and industrial or marine varnishes are the classic cases. It also holds gloss and resists yellowing better on exterior exposure.
What drier package do you recommend?
On solid resin: cobalt 0.04–0.06%, zirconium 0.05–0.07% and calcium 0.08–0.10%. Cobalt drives surface dry, zirconium drives through-dry and calcium acts as an auxiliary that prevents drier loss to pigment surfaces. Fine-tune against your own pigmentation and climate.
What is the shelf life and how should the resin be stored?
12 months ex works, in the original unopened and undamaged drum, stored indoors in a dry place between 5 and 40 °C for the conventional grade and 5 and 30 °C for the urethane-modified grade. Keep drums out of direct sunlight. Once a drum is opened, minimise headspace to limit skinning.
What packaging is available?
Lined steel drums — 180 kg net for RV124, 190 kg net for the urethane-modified grade — palletized and shrink-wrapped for sea freight. Flexitank and IBC options can be discussed for large regular volumes.
Do you supply a Material Safety Data Sheet?
Yes. A full MSDS accompanies every consignment, and a copy can be sent in advance for your plant approval process on request.
